What actually is Burnout?

When you’re exhausted… but can’t switch off
Burnout doesn’t always look how people expect.
It’s not always dramatic or obvious. In fact, many people experiencing burnout are still showing up, getting things done, and holding everything together.
From the outside, it can look like you’re coping.
But inside, it feels very different.
You Feel Constantly “On”
Your mind doesn’t stop.
Even when you sit down to rest, you’re:
thinking about what needs to be done
replaying conversations
planning, organising, managing
It’s like your system doesn’t have an off switch.
You’re Tired—But Rest Doesn’t Work
You might be exhausted, but when you try to relax:
your mind keeps going
your body feels wired
sleep isn’t as restorative as it used to be
You wake up still feeling drained.
Everything Feels Like Effort
Things that used to feel simple now take more energy.
Small decisions feel heavy. Your patience is lower. You may feel easily overwhelmed or emotionally stretched.
Even things you used to enjoy can start to feel like “too much.”
You Feel Disconnected From Yourself
This is often the part people don’t talk about.
You might feel:
flat or numb
less like yourself
unsure what you actually need anymore
It’s not that you don’t care—it’s that your system is tired.
You Keep Pushing Through Anyway
Many people experiencing burnout are used to being:
capable
reliable
the one others depend on
So instead of stopping, you keep going.
You tell yourself:“ I just need to get through this week” “I’ll rest when things calm down”
But they rarely do.
What’s Really Going On
Burnout isn’t just about doing too much.
It’s what happens when your nervous system has been in a constant state of pressure for too long.
Your body has adapted to being “on”—and forgotten how to fully switch off.
A Different Way to Understand It
Burnout isn’t a weakness. It’s not a failure.
It’s a signal.
Your body asking for a different way of being—one that includes rest, space, and support.
If This Feels Familiar
If you recognise yourself in this, you’re not alone.
And more importantly—you’re not stuck like this.
With the right support, your system can learn how to slow down again.
Support in Chippenham & Wiltshire
If you’re based in Chippenham or the surrounding Wiltshire area, there are gentle, supportive ways to begin reconnecting with yourself.
Breathwork is one approach that works with the body—helping you move out of that constant “on” state and into something calmer and more steady.
A Quiet Starting Point
You don’t have to fix everything.
You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You just need a place to begin.
